A 90-mph fastball can reach home plate in 400 milliseconds, or
four-tenths of a second.

But a batter has just a quarter-second to identify the pitch and
decide whether to swing.

PASSION FOR SPORTS + PASSION FOR LIGHTING

For many of us at KCL Engineering there lies a deep connection to sports.  From the nostalgia of growing up rooting for a beloved team, to the rush of entering the venue of our heroes.  So while our natural born talents led us to engineering, we foster that passion for sports through lighting. It's the thrill of being a participant; one small part of a player's success.  From the sidelines.  Where the lights live.  That's where KCL resides.

PIONEERS OF LED SPORTS LIGHTING

KCL brings an engineering approach to sports lighting.  We participate in research activities and foster relationships with the industry's leading lighting manufacturers to continually advance this technology.  KCL has become a sought after consultant due to our vast knowledge of sports lighting design considerations and active participation within the sports lighting community.

SPORTS LIGHTING PROJECTS

Sports Lighting Market Participation

Becoming entrenched in the sports lighting industry is one way we uphold our pledge to remain knowledgeable and informed consultants for our clients. We have worked with professional sports league officials, have attended operational summits, and regularly meet with lighting manufacturers to learn about emerging products.

Involvement in sports industry initiatives has also elevated our understanding of best practices.

Sports & Recreational Areas Committee

This committee inside of the IES is charged to develop basic recommended practices for lighting sports and recreational areas; and to develop a separate guidance criterion of lighting unique to each sport or recreational activity; including, but not limited to, illuminance and spectator needs.

Next Generation Luminaires Competition - Sports Lighting Judge

The NGL Outdoor competition included sports lighting for the first time in 2016. Sports luminaires were evaluated on a
university multi-use playing field. This remains an important application for future NGL competitions.

Green Sports Alliance
LED Lighting Playbook

Mike Lambert, IES, LC, Senior Lighting Designer at KCL Engineering is a contributing author to the upcoming Green Sports Alliance LED Lighting Playbook. This publication will provide recommendations for optimal lighting equipment selection, performance, design, and installation for sports applications.

"No advancement in sports lighting has been as revolutionary as LED.  It benefits virtually every aspect of sports including player performance, spectator viewing, and through the elimination of strobing during HD broadcasting and slow motion playbacks."

-  James Deeds, PE, LEED AP | Senior Sports Lighting Designer
